Las nuevas narrativas encuentran acomodo en la realidad virtual

La realidad virtual es una tendencia al alza, una nueva manera de contar historias que aglutina varias tendencias del periodismo actual: el vídeo, la tecnología, la experiencia del usuario y la inmersión en su dispositivo a través de una aplicación.

En los últimos años hemos presenciado la evolución de estas tecnologías con dispositivos como Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear o el formato de bajo coste de Google, las Google Carboards.

Diarios generalistas como el New York Times, económicos como el Wall Street Journal, revistas como el New Yorker y hasta agencias de noticias como Associated Press, experimentan con esta tendencia en una apuesta por profundizar en formatos atractivos orientados a despertar y capturar el interés de sus audiencias a través de nuevas aplicaciones.

Precisamente la última iniciativa de calado en torno a la realidad virtual la ha protagonizado el NYT y con ella ha logrado batir su récord de descargas en el lanzamiento de una aplicación.

Para el éxito de esta iniciativa, el NYT ha distribuido más de un millón de Google Carboards a los suscriptores dominicales del diario para que pudieran acceder, a través de una aplicación móvil, al contenido de la revista dominical, que incluía un documental que cuenta la historia de tres niños desplazados de Sudán, Siria y Ucrania.

Las Google Carboard son visores de realidad virtual, un artilugio de cartón al que se acopla el dispositivo móvil para transformarlo en un visor casero de realidad virtual que, con la ayuda de una aplicación del propio diario, permite al usuario sumergirse en la historia de una manera distinta, atrapando su atención y casi haciéndolo partícipe en un formato de 360 grados que simula el espacio donde se producen los hechos.

“This is probably the largest communal screening of a virtual reality film ever,” said New York Times Magazine editor Jake Silverstein, as people began to fumble with cardboard visors.
